Licence for Hearth, Lowfire Setup and the Patcher

Last updated 26 October 2026

Template, not yet reviewed by a lawyer. It describes what our website and software really do, but the wording still needs legal review, and items in [brackets] are placeholders to fill in.

This agreement is between you and [Lowfire legal entity name] (“Lowfire”, “we”) and covers Hearth (our launcher), Lowfire Setup (our installer and uninstaller) and the Lowfire Patcher (our updater), including their updates (together, “the software”). By installing or using the software you accept it.

1. Your licence

The software is free. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use it on computers you own or control, to install, update, manage and play Lowfire games. You may make copies for your own backups, and you may use the portable mode on removable drives you own.

You may not sell the software, redistribute modified copies, or remove our notices. Please link to our downloads page rather than re-hosting the installers.

2. What the software does on your computer

So there are no surprises, this is what the software changes:

  • Files. It installs games and Hearth into the folders you pick (by default under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Lowfire) and keeps its own data in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Lowfire\Hearth. It never writes outside the folders it manages, except for the shortcuts and registry entries below and support zips you ask for.
  • Registry (your user only). An entry per installed program under Windows Apps (so you can uninstall normally), a list of installed games under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Lowfire\Games, and, only if you turn on Start with Windows, a Run entry for Hearth.
  • Shortcuts. Start menu and desktop shortcuts, if you choose them in the installer.
  • No administrator rights, services, drivers or background tasks. The software runs as you, only while it’s open.
  • Updates. Hearth checks our download server for updates to itself and your games when it’s online, and installs them when you choose. Updates are staged and verified before they replace anything, and failed updates roll back automatically.
  • Uninstalling removes the program and its registry entries. Your saves and settings are kept unless you ask for them to be removed.

What the software sends over the internet, and what it doesn’t, is described in the privacy policy. In short: only download requests to cdn.lowfire.ly, and none at all in offline mode.

3. Games and mods

Each game is covered by its own licence. Hearth can install mods you choose from zip files; mods are made by other people, not by us, and you use them at your own risk.

4. Warranty

We test the software carefully, and it verifies every file it installs. But to the extent the law allows, it is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected.

5. Liability

To the extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for loss of data. Keep backups of anything important. This doesn’t limit liability that can’t be limited by law.

6. Open-source components

The software includes fonts under the SIL Open Font License. Their licences are installed with it (in the licences folder) and listed in licences and credits.

7. Ending this agreement

You can end it at any time by uninstalling the software. It ends automatically if you seriously break it.

8. Law

This agreement is governed by [the laws of the country of registration], and disputes go to [the courts of that country]. If you’re a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live.
